Acid Ray Summer2009

Here I am back again, yes I know it’s been sometime soI am just gonna get stuck in and tell you how it is. Acid Ray for me was a ray of hope, a way of bypassing the laborious bureaucracy of record labels and getting my sound and others to people around the world, the heritage of Rugby music mattered to me as much as my own projects and Acid Ray was conceived as a way of representing some of the great music made in this locality.

Around the time the site was launched we had some good bands and an almost unified feel but it was a time when life got complicated and a little harder, we had our highs and the lows came prematurely early. I thank everyone for their time and patience, now I feel time has moved on and we have to too, I hope to be able to retain some of this site but that depends on the goodwill of other people who I have always been at the mercy of.

Time to say goodbye to Gary and Gail and Auntie Alfie’s Medicinal Cabinet, sadly Gary and Gail have moved away back to Gary’s stomping ground of olde. AAMC departed on top form and left a big hole in the local music scene, Gary was an outsider but brought along his good natured humour, honesty and generosity, he was a pretty good musician as well, but as we all cry tears into our shandies our hearts are lifted when we hear that we will still get some of Gary’s onions at crimbo, hurray, anyway everyone wishes Gary and Gail the very best for their future.

Uberfuzz emerged this year from a long period of hibernation, honed down to a very thrifty duo featuring Paul and Kelly, they are currently performing locally like the carpenters from space.

Ex Uberfuzzer Mat has metamorphasised into A Nobel Ghost and can be found on myspace, an interesting offshoot from the Uberfuzz family.

Fan Tan Jack are still a beguiling live outfit currently bringing their gypsy beatnik vibe to local people, please someone give this band a gig in London and experience some thing unique.

The Sound are currently a surprise hit on the local scene, kind of Brothers of the Head Split down the middle, a beatbox and the added attraction of the Uberfuzz duo helping out on a few songs, their recent appearance at the Strip Club was their best performance yet, all credit to Tom and Ben’s hard work and the corrupting influence of Rugby Psychedelia and Anton Newcombe, these guys are hotly tipped as the next big thing which I hope in time they will become.

Urgzland, at last our egg and are reborn as the new messiahs of Rugby Psychedelic Fuzz Rock, or we finally got our fucking act together, thanks to Henry who used to be a Retard, he then did a stint as a Young Offender but he’s alright now, a few months rehabilitation in the URGZ has done him the world of good,Paul from Uberfuzz has finally infiltrated our ranks to devastating effect dramatically increasing our potential to warp minds. This year we started out in the frozen wilderness playing in the lost village of Monks Kirby, man was it cold, we headlined the Strip Club outdoor bash at The Cross, we supported the great Roy And The Devils Motorcycle who played an amazing set, our last gig at The Criterion Leicester with Dead Cowboy Culture was a great night, thanks to Scott from DCC for getting that one together. Latest Urgz news is that the first Urgz lp “Love The Urgz, Hate The Urgz” has been reworked into Urgzland our first debut lp, it has all gone through my new Toft mixing desk, it is all sounding fab and groovy and no filler, just ain’t got round to recording that stuff yet!, more gigs with Dead Cowboy Culture in Leicester and another outing to the Labour Club Northampton soon.

Alphastone album on the back burner at the mo, half the album written some more to go, I’m very committed to doing another collection of Alphastone but as The Urgz are my main live act I have to finish our debut first.

The Strip Club is still here and still the best live venue in town, there is also the Style Bar as well which also is a great venue, Dinesh’s night and James Rai’s Stereotype which are worth checking out for acoustic and up and coming indie acts. The Strip Club has over two years provided a venue for local and out of town acts, as I write we have had the wonderful Dope Aviators who made an epic journey all the way from Prague to play for us, a special thanks to them, and still more to come, my personal favourite solo performer the immensely talented Jim Zorn, My First Tooth featuring ex No Remote and AAMC drum maestro Gareth, and many more, if interested in playing, Dj-ing or just coming along check out the myspace page.

The book “Day in a life”, the story of Tommy Weber has been written and published and now available to buy. For anyone interested in buying this book I would say this, after getting my fingers severely burnt with the Spacemen 3 book I vowed never again to get involved with writers.

I spent as much time with Tommy as anyone did, infact I felt I my relationship with him was distinctly different than anyone else, during the times when nobody seemed to care about his well being I was there offering support and help but Tommy was often beyond help. Overall I considered myself to be the only person who could offer a decent comprehensive account of his time spent living in Rugby but all I get is two measly quotes contained within the book. There is inaccurate information which needs amending, but what I find most disagreeable is the writer’s description of Rugby as a small market town where farmers come to kick each others’ arses at the weekend, this kind of stuff illustrates the ego centric, ignorance of the author, I will remind him that Rugby once was a place that drew in many people, who? Well the Hungarian Scientist Denis Gabor who invented the hologram here in Rugby, Sir Frank Whittle inventor of the jet engine, Rupert Brooke the famous war poet, a whole lot of rock stars such as Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Marc Bolan and the list could go on, I could also elaborate on the town’s rich industrial heritage past.

Mr Greenfield seems to purposely set out to denigrate Rugby or Ugby as he calls it, sorry man but that just ain’t on, I think overall Tommy would have loved to stuff that book right up his arse, read it if you must but beware it is a stage managed affair, check out the conspicuous plug for Jake Weber the actor, [bit part in Medium].

I may forgive Greenfields mealy mouthed opinion of Rugby as I intend to write my own account of Tommy’s Rugby years which seem to be conveniently airbrushed from the canvas.

I do not intend to write a book only a lengthy piece titled “Tommy Can You Hear Me” to be published as part of my series of literary wordzines.

If you want to read the strangest review of the book out there check out Kandida Crazy Horse’s review.

As the world spins on it’s axis sometimes it is hard to cling on but try we do, please forgive my inadequacies and inconsistence I’m still here trying as hard as ever.

Over ‘n’ out

Pete
